Dangerous goods travelling to or from the United States are generally permitted in containers that meet U.S. standards (described in the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations).
The Canadian Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations
(TDG) and US Hazardous Materials Regulations of Title 49, Code
of Federal Regulations (49 CFR) are similar, but not identical;
most variations, but not all of them, are dealt with by a Reciprocal
Agreement that establishes procedures for cross border shipments.
In order to carry dangerous goods from Canada into the U.S., drivers must:
- Produce a valid training certificate
- have emergency response information for the dangerous goods being transported and know what to do in case of an emergency
- make sure the 24-hour number on the shipping document is accessible from the U.S.
