Resisting Pressures to Compromise
Your persuasive skills may be needed long after a set of recommendations have been accepted and implemented. You may need to use those skills with your employees as often as with management. It is one thing to deal with a specific target like a particular purchase or repair, but it may be much harder to ensure that maintenance is repeated as often as necessary or to see that workers wear PPE. Remember, setting a good example is one of the best tools you have in getting workers to use their PPE.

We are in a very competitive business where profit margins are very slim. A little extra bad weather, deliver days, unexpected problems, design changes, unanticipated legislative restrictions, rework ordered by officers can rapidly eat up a profit, leaving costs on the job mounting. When that happens, you can be faced with pressure tempting you to "speed things up." This can lead to gaining a few extra hours and forgetting this can result in fatigue, removal of a guard because it's faster, or eliminating a standby watch or a spark watch. The list is almost endless, and you need to be prepared for it.
